On Boarding Virtual Engagement

Lighthouse is a small company.  We wear a lot of hats here, as the overused phrase goes.  As the newest member of the team I have spent the last 4 months trying to get up to speed on everything I can.  And I can tell you, our team did a damn good job pointing me in the right direction when I needed help during the on-boarding process!  However, I have worked at other organizations where “on-boarding” was not a process at all.  It was a few meetings here and there, a few “this is who we are” webinars or videos, and a lot of “just go to the intranet, it’s there”.  I’m not judging at all.  This is the way it is.  At some point, you hire pros and you expect pros to get their work done.  Managers don’t always have the time to run through each and every scenario an employee might come across during their time doing a job.  So what can managers and executives do to improve the on-boarding processes at their organizations?  We have a few ideas! They involve using stepping into the virtual world and using virtual engagement conferencing.

There has been so much research and so many reports about how much it costs to bring an employee on and retain that employee that most Human Resources professionals can recite the metrics like one of the subjects of Outliers…. “10,000 hours”!  In case you want a quick update, check out this post on the pressure on smaller companies to find and retain talent.  Let’s just all agree, finding the right talent and getting that talent trained and producing quickly is pretty important.  Agreed?

Our team is not here to tell you how to train.  Our team is not here to tell you how to recruit.  We are here to educate you about solutions that can potentially help you reach a broader audience, engage that audience, and leave a lasting impression on that audience.  That seems like the type of communications you want to have with new employees, right?  You want them engaged and you want the information you provide to stick with them during their time with your company.  Human Resources professionals have the methodology and information, Lighthouse has the platform.  Here are some thoughts on ways a partnership with Lighthouse can help you onboard new employees quickly along with providing an ongoing resource during those first few critical months.

Virtual Engagement Conferencing

Take a look at how we believe Virtual Engagement Conferencing is great for job fairs here.  But that is not nearly the limit when it come to Human Resources use cases for Virtual Engagement Conferencing.  Creating your own “virtual training center” is just the start!  You can host virtual trainings for remote employees, utilize gamification to make the process a bit more fun, and promote engagement with other new team members.  You can also  build out by-department “booths” that house training/onboarding materials for download and man those booths with onboarding experts throughout the day.  Most importantly, however, you can create and monitor the training curriculum through our best-in-class reporting and analytics, stay on top of all your new hires, and make sure they are getting the most value out of the information you provided.

Training Pods

Adobe Connect is the most powerful web conferencing tool on the market.  Do I think people underestimate the power of web conferencing?  Of course I do!  I have sat on “Welcome to Company X” webinars that epitomized the idea of “going through the motions”.  Why not leverage this technology to really focus on getting your people excited about your company and educated on why they will be successful!  Develop breakout rooms/training pods so employees can interact in a more intimate environment with trainers and company leaders.  Interact real time to address questions and problems new employees are having.  There is no reason that “just good enough web conferencing” should ever be uttered by the Human Resources team.

On-boarding will always be a mix of science and art.  At the end of the day, not everyone is going to “get it” when it comes to what makes your company special.  However, if you can get those true A players up to speed quicker, and ensure they engage with your vision and purpose, then all reports show that employee retention will be that much easier for your organization!
