One of the most over-used cliches in the conferencing/collaboration world is “we’re technology agnostic….”. I cringe whenever I hear our competition or one of our own meeting consultants use this phrase. When someone says “We’re technology agnostic!”, what they are really saying is “hey look, we carry seven different web/audio/video (insert service type here) products and we don’t care which one you choose, as long as you buy, errr I mean choose, one from us!”
How can anyone who is passionate about collaboration and their customers be technology agnostic?! It’s like saying you don’t have an opinion on what the best technology is for your customer’s given application.
Now it’s true that at Lighthouse Conferencing that we do offer several different collaboration solutions. A major part of our philosophy is not pushing a particular technology — many providers do this because it’s the only one they have — so no matter your challenge, they’ll pitch that their solution does it all. But we certainly have preferences. And our preferences have nothing to do with how we’re compensated from selling any given technology. Our preferences are derived out of living with and testing these technologies every day. We have access to the best collaboration technologies in the world and when we have a given application we naturally choose the best technology and service to get the job done.
I certainly have a favorite solution for marketing events. It’s not going to be the same solution I use for quick, on the fly, collaboration based meetings. If I’m running a long term training project I have yet another solution that I prefer. And if I need to do a face to face deposition, I’ll probably be running some sort of true, point to point HD video conference.
At Lighthouse Conferencing we have a full quiver of conferencing and collaboration solutions and we believe each one has a purpose. Just as you don’t play 18 holes of golf with just one club, it would be unwise to think you fulfill every business application with one solution. The challenge in golf is matching up the right club with the right shot. In business you must match up the right collaboration solution to the appropriate business challenge. I promise, we’re not technology agnostic. We’re VERY opinionated when it comes to conferencing solutions. We only let our customers use solutions we’d use ourselves – and only the very best is acceptable to the Lighthouse crew. We’ll let you know exactly what you need and make sure you know what you don’t need as well.
And remember, the next time someone tells you they’re “technology agnostic” all it means is they either don’t understand collaboration technology or they aren’t taking the time to understand your business and challenges. Is that the kind of conferencing provider you want to partner with?
